Building Connections Between Research, Practice, and Families
Welcome to the inaugural edition of Literacy Champions, the official newsletter for Literacy Bridges.
We are thrilled to introduce you to Literacy Bridges, a growing online literacy center dedicated to making literacy research understandable, accessible, and useful for educators, families, students, and literacy advocates.
The name Literacy Bridges reflects our central mission. Every year, researchers in universities and educational organizations across the country produce important findings that help us better understand how children learn to read, write, and communicate. At the same time, teachers, families, tutors, and community members work tirelessly to support literacy development in real-world settings. Too often, however, these two worlds remain separate.
Literacy Bridges exists to connect them.
Our goal is to bridge current literacy research with classroom instruction, family engagement, and community support. We believe that evidence-based literacy practices should not be confined to academic journals or conferences. They should be understandable, practical, and available to everyone who plays a role in helping children become successful readers and writers.
Whether you are a teacher searching for instructional resources, a parent wanting to better support your child’s reading development, a school leader exploring professional learning opportunities, or simply someone who cares deeply about literacy, we hope Literacy Bridges becomes a trusted resource for you.
What You’ll Find at Literacy Bridges
Although we are still in the early stages of development, we are proud to offer a growing collection of free resources designed to support literacy learning across a variety of audiences.
Visitors to our website will find:
- Printable guides and handouts that explain important literacy concepts.
- Online resources that translate literacy research into practical strategies and examples.
- Information about evidence-based literacy practices and why they matter.
- Resources designed to support conversations between schools, families, and communities.
We know that not everyone learns best by reading articles or handouts. That’s why we’ve also launched the Literacy Bridges YouTube Channel, featuring short, family-friendly videos that explain literacy topics in an approachable and engaging way. Our goal is to make complex concepts easier to understand and provide practical ideas that families and educators can use right away.
Growing Through Partnership
One of the most exciting aspects of Literacy Bridges is the opportunity to collaborate with others who share our commitment to literacy.
We are especially grateful for our partnership with the undergraduate education program at Washburn University. As part of this collaboration, future educators have developed Book Bridges, companion guides for families participating in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program. These guides provide activities, discussion ideas, and literacy-focused suggestions connected to the books that children receive each month.
This partnership reflects what Literacy Bridges hopes to do more of in the future: bring together researchers, educators, university students, families, and community organizations to create meaningful literacy resources that can be used beyond the classroom.

Looking Ahead
While Literacy Bridges currently serves primarily as an online resource hub, we are actively exploring ways to expand our reach based on the needs and interests of the communities we serve.
Future offerings may include:
- Professional development for schools and districts
- Instructional coaching and implementation support
- Family literacy workshops
- Community presentations
- Direct literacy services for students
- New partnerships with schools, community organizations, and literacy-focused initiatives
As we continue to grow, we want our work to be guided by the people who use it. We look forward to learning from educators, families, and literacy champions about the questions they have, the challenges they face, and the types of resources and services they would find most valuable.

The strongest bridges are built through collaboration, and we hope you will become part of the Literacy Bridges community.
